Important Information Regarding Pending Change of Status and Deferment

  • I-20 SEVIS deferment eligibility while changing status will be determined by the Designated School Office (DSO). Please check your email for any clarification requests by the DSO.
  • If the change of status is approved you must enroll full-time and follow F-1 status requirements by the next school session or within 5 months (summer included), whichever comes first.
  • SEVIS deferments can only be done for the next school session and you must defer every semester until it is approved.
  • You must contact ISSS for guidance in enrollment if your program does not offer to start your program the next semester (including summer) after your COS approval.

Example: If you are approved during July or August (before the fall start date) and your program only admits for the spring you will be required to enroll full-time in the fall as an F-1 student. You must contact your academic department regarding temporary program changes to meet F-1 regulations.

Financial Information Update

Previously sent financial documentation is valid for 6 months, you will not be asked to resubmit financial documents if it has been less than 6 months from when you received your I-20.

Questions below are optional in case you are updating your financial documents.

Important: If you were previously receiving a scholarship/assistantship you must upload updated award letter for new term as proof that you will still be receiving a scholarship/assistantship the next semester.
