    2. F-1 Visa
    3. Most recent I-20
    4. Governmental ID, if applicable (example: driver's license)

A person without valid travel documents can be arrested, threatened with deportation and taken into ICE custody.

If you would like the ISSS Office to issue a letter confirming that you are enrolled in a full course of study and authorized to work on campus, the letter can include the following details: the name of your on-campus employer, the nature of your employment, your start date, and your supervisor’s name. Once you have confirmed this position, you may submit a request for this letter to the ISSS Office.

If you are a new international student, you must complete the F-1 International Student Immigration Check-In prior to request any letter.

    • Please ensure that you use this checklist, provided by the Social Security Office to gather all required original documents and copies for your appointment. Once you have everything gathered, you will book an appointment online in which they require you to make a booking 7-10 days in advance in the day you would like to visit their office. You will not receive a receipt the day of your appointment. You will receive a receipt in the mail a few days after your appointment with confirmation that your SSN is being processed.

Please note that the ISSS Office cannot issue a Social Security Number (SSN). While waiting for their SSN appointment, students who are eligible may request an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) through the appropriate application process, often with guidance from their on-campus employer or the Human Resources Office.

Why do I need a Social Security number?

In order to work in the United States, every eligible F and M student needs a Social Security number (SSN). If you do not know if you are eligible to work, please speak with your designated school official (DSO) or responsible officer (RO).

Am I able to apply for an SSN?

F and M students who have authorization to work in the United States may apply for an SSN. In addition, any F or M student who wishes to apply for a driver's license (in a state requiring an SSN before getting a license) may apply for an SSN.

Many states require that you or your dependent have an SSN or have already applied for one before you apply for a driver's license. If you or your dependents are not eligible to work, but want to apply for a driver's license, you must first apply for an SSN at the local Social Security office and receive a Form SSA-L676, "Refusal to Process SSN Application."  To learn more, see our Driving in the States page.

  • Please note that there is not a request form to complete for either of these two requests. To have one of these requests processed, please contact inational@txstate.edu.
